Excuse me while I flail.
SO. I’ve known that Ohno had a legit rank in Japanese calligraphy and was aware that he’s yodan (yon-dan, level 4), which is one rank/license short of becoming a full sensei. There was an interview/cross-talk with Jun that I can’t honestly remember when, where Jun said he wanted to learn and Ohno said that if Jun’s seriously willing to learn, Ohno will get that last requirement (to get a license) so he can teach Jun.
Around that time, I thought Ohno got his yodan status mid-twenties. But apparently he’s already at yodan in 2000.
Why am I flailing? Let me talk about calligraphy rankings in Japan. It’s much like martial arts, there are ranks. And for each rank, you have to go through several qualifications and of course an exam, and then you get recognized with a certificate and a license at some point (license to teach). A yodan is equivalent to a 4th degree black belt.
Because shodan (the 1st level, lowest dan) is already a black belt. And before you get to this first dan, there are 10 lower ranks to go through first. Here’s a clearer picture:
Airports see more sincere kisses than wedding halls. The walls of hospitals have heard more prayers than the walls of churches.
Music Station: Maruyama is falling down, falling down, falling down~
they look alike with that hair
